Although the exact beginning of the Pirags is unknown, it is believed the tradition is at least 1000 years old. The roots of the making of Piragi spread back to the primarily agrarian society of rural Latvia. Farmers would utilize elements from their bountiful harvests and livestock and combine them in this roll. Wheat from their fields to make the dough, and bacon from pigs for the stuffing became the primary ingredients of the Piragi. The making of Piragi became a tradition of showing off the prosperity one had attained on his farm.
